New consul here in all-out reach to fellow Mexicans

As Mexico's attorney general from 1996 to 2000, Jorge Madrazo Cuellar met with top government officials from around the world.

But as head of the Mexican consulate in Seattle, he says he wants to focus on migrant workers, restaurant employees, prisoners and others who most desperately need the consulate's help.

"My strategy is to be very close to the most vulnerable population in the state," he said.

Since taking office in March, Madrazo has traveled to Yakima, Pasco, Sunnyside, Wenatchee and Walla Walla, as well as to Anchorage.

The 15-person Seattle consulate serves both Washington and Alaska.

One goal was to tell Mexicans about consulate services - obtaining visas and other documents - but the visits also were to let them know the consulate will be more aggressive in defending their rights.

"There are a lot of Mexican peasants who are working in the fields ...
